Track And Field Strikes Gold At Conference Meet Friday

McMiller wins silver, re-sets own school record in women's weight throw.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Memphis men's distance medley relay won gold to pace the Tigers' effort in first-day action at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Friday. The two-day league meet concludes Saturday.

The distance medley relay of Tate Wyatt, Kolbeinn Gunnarsson, Naaman Norment and Zachary Wyatt took first in the event in a time of 10:04.23. The Tigers took the relay crown by a mere :00.33 seconds ahead of second-place Connecticut. The gold was the first indoor medal of any kind for Tate and Zachary Wyatt and Norment. For Gunnarsson, it was his second career indoor gold, as he was a member of the first-place 4x400 meter relay in 2017.

On the women's side, DeeNia McMiller re-set her school record in the weight throw for the fourth time this season in placing runner-up in the event Friday. Her 67-9.75 (20.67m) throw surpassed her previous-best by nearly a foot (66-11.25; 20.40m), which she recorded at the Jan. 25 A-State Invitational. The silver was McMiller's second in as many seasons at the league indoor championships.

Tigers Tidbits
- At last year's championships, Memphis was in fifth place on the men's side and 10thon the women's side after first-day action. The following day, the Tigers men's team moved up to second and finished as the indoor runner-up.
- Two other Tigers earned All-American Athletic Conference honors with bronze-medal finishes Friday. Adar Sheere placed third in the men's weight throw (64-1.25; 19.54m), and Tanalya Gordon third in the women's long jump (19-2.5; 5.85m). The medals were the first of Sheere's and Gordon's careers.
- Other scorers for the Tigers men's team were: Matthew Kamph (6th) and Julian Sanchez-Pinto (7th) in the 5000 meters, Olushola Olojo (7th) in the long jump, and Adam Neelly (5th) in the weight throw.
- Other scorers for the Memphis women's team were Amber Simpson (6th) and Mona Jaidi (7th) in the weight throw.
- Four men's performers set personal-bests Friday, and they were: Calvin Austin III in the 200 meters, Christian Corsello in the mile, Matthew Kamph in the 5000 meters, and Adam Neelly in the weight throw.
- Five women's performers set personal-bests Friday, and they were: Savanna Owens in the 400 meters, Paige Sandwell in the mile, and DeeNia McMiller, Amber Simpson and Vigdis Jonsdottir in the weight throw.Â
