The Tigers get to work right away in preparation for Saturday's game
DALLAS – In its first full day in Dallas, the Memphis football team had a jam-packed day filled with a press conference, the first practice, a trip to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and a welcome event hosted by the Dallas Cowboys.
Head coach Ryan Silverfield and players Brady White and Jacobi Francis kicked off the day with a pre-practice press conference where Memphis and local media outlets had their first opportunity to meet with the Tigers upon arrival in Dallas.
"Our young men have worked hard to deserve this," said Silverfield. "We're going to continue to work hard this week so on the grand stage on Saturday, we come out and showcase what we've been able to accomplish.
"At the end of the day, this is what you want. The 901 has a certain sense of pride. It doesn't matter who our opponent is, where we play, when we play. It's always going to be about ourselves, focus on ourselves. Look, we get to do it on a national stage versus a great team in Penn State this Saturday," added Silverfield.
The Tigers spent the better part of two hours on the field at AT&T Stadium in practice number one of five Monday morning. Media had the opportunity to capture photos and video in the first 15 minutes of practice.
After time at the stadium, the Tigers traveled to downtown Dallas to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children to visit with patients and families who were unable to make it home for the Holidays.
TSRHC treats many of the world's most complex orthopedic cases, as well as certain related arthritic and neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. The specialists in the six Centers for Excellence spend a lifetime practicing, researching and pioneering pediatric orthopedic care.
Memphis was welcomed by TSRHC President and CEO Bob Walker along with members of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association. Before meeting with current patients and families, the Tigers presented their honorary captain for this week, Rocky Smith, with a Memphis jersey and a warm reception. Smith has been a patient of TSRHC after experiencing an accident in junior high.
The Tigers concluded the evening with a warm welcome reception at The Star in Frisco, hosted by the Dallas Cowboys. The Memphis and Penn State football teams joined together for a team dinner along with a magic show performed by former NFL long snapper Jon Dorenbos.
Memphis picks up Tuesday with practice number two at AT&T Stadium at 10:15 a.m. The first 15 minutes of practice will be open for the media in Dallas. Continue to follow the Tigers in Dallas for the 84th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Twitter at @MemphisFB and Instagram at @MemphisFootball.
