UofM freshmen combine to score 39 points en route to second-straight victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Boogie Ellis drained six 3-pointers – one trey shy of a University of Memphis freshman record – and James Wiseman added 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocks to lead the 14th-ranked Tigers past UIC, 92-46, Friday night at FedExForum.
Ellis scored 18 of his points in the first half to lead the offensive charge and the UofM defense contributed, too, holding the Flames to 20 percent shooting in the first half and 24.2 percent for the game.
Four members of the Tigers' heralded recruiting class – Ellis, Wiseman, D.J. Jeffries and Precious Achiuwa – scored in double figures. Jeffries had 14 and Achiuwa had 10. Sophomore Tyler Harris added 11, including going 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
"I was really proud of the young guys, they did some really special stuff out there on the floor defensively tonight," said Tigers coach Penny Hardaway. "The only (disappointment) was (UIC) had 16 offensive rebounds, but I get it with young guys. When you're blowing teams out you start not focusing on the small things.
"We're not good enough to do that yet because we're about to go on the road (vs. Oregon Nov. 12) and get a test. But, other than that, to hold them to 24 percent shooting from the field, to me, is major."
The Tigers (2-0) shot 52 percent from 3-point range (14-of-27) and outrebounded the Flames (1-1) by 10, 43-33. The UofM also had 37 bench points, the bulk (34 points) coming from Jeffries (14), Harris (11) and Alex Lomax (9).
Ellis said the six 3-pointers weren't a personal high for him. At his San Diego high school, he once dropped in 12 3-pointers.
But he enjoyed the best shooting night as a Tiger. His four second-half points came on strong drives.
"My teammates found me tonight, they did a great job of looking for me," Ellis said. "And I appreciate that."
Ahead by 31 at halftime, the Tigers stretched their lead to 45 points midway through the second half behind continued torrid shooting. The advantage grew to 49 points with eight minutes remaining after a soft, 15-foot turnaround jumper by Wiseman gave the UofM a 77-28 cushion.
The lead reached 52 points with six minutes left.
In the opening half, the Tigers shot 59 percent, made 11 3-pointers and built a commanding 47-16 lead.
Ellis made six of seven 3-point attempts in the first half en route to 18 points.
The Tigers gradually extended their lead throughout the half with the 31-point advantage being the biggest of the opening 20 minutes.
The UofM limited UIC to 20 percent shooting in the half.
As impressive as the Tigers were, there are areas that need to be addressed.
"Coach didn't like that we gave up 16 offensive rebounds," Jeffries said. "He's been really hard on us about that. He said that's losing basketball (if it happens at Oregon). We've got to do better."
