Second Tiger to win the award.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Senior wide receiver Antonio Gibson was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation offensive player of the week Sunday. Gibson was selected for the honor after setting a conference and school record with 386 all-purpose yards in a 54-48 win over #15/14 SMU.Â
Â
Gibson is the second Tiger to earn the Walter Camp National Player of the Week offensive honor. Quarterback Riley Ferguson also received it on Sept. 17, 2017.Â
Â
Saturday night, Gibson became the first Tiger since 2008 to score a touchdown three different ways (rushing, receiving, kickoff return). He rushed for 97 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown, had 130 receiving yards, including a touchdown, and a 97-yard kickoff return, also for a touchdown.Â
Â
A junior college transfer from East Central Community College, Gibson has appeared in 23 career games at Memphis. He has 25 catches, 19 this season, for 580 career yards. His six receiving touchdowns this year lead the team.Â
Â
In his first year as a primary returner on the kick return squad, he ranks sixth in the country with 30.1 yards per return. He also currently ranks 30th in the NCAA with 126.89 all-purpose yards per game.Â
Â
Memphis enters a bye weekend with an 8-1 overall record and a 4-1 mark in American Athletic Conference play.  The Tigers have back-to-back road games on tap following the bye week. Memphis will play at Houston on Nov. 16, then at USF on Nov. 23. The team will close out the regular season with current AAC East Division leading Cincinnati on Nov. 29th on either ESPN or ABC. Tickets for that home finale, which will also be Memphis' senior day, are on sale now.Â
