Women's Basketball Opens Road Swing with SIU

Wednesday's tip set for 12 p.m. in Carbondale, Ill.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Away from home for the next four games, the Memphis women's basketball team starts its road swing with a midweek game against Southern Illinois on Wednesday. Tipoff against the Salukis is set for 12 p.m. at the Banterra Center in Carbondale, Ill. Wednesday's game will be streamed on ESPN+, a subscription-based service from ESPN.

Memphis travels north after dropping its last game to George Washington. Three Tigers scored in double-figures in the setback, led by Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu's 14 points. Jamirah Shutes added 13, while Madison Griggs put up 12 points on four shots from beyond the arc.
Shutes, who added seven rebounds and four assists against the Colonials, was named to the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists for the past week. The sophomore has scored in double-figures in each of Memphis' first four games, leading the team in scoring in three of them. On the year, Shutes is leading the team in scoring, rebounding and assists.
Also making their marks early on this season are newcomers Fankam Mendjiadeu and Griggs. The second-leading scorer on the team, Fankam Mendjiadeu holds a 10.3 point per game average, while ranking second on the team with 6.3 rebounds a night. Griggs has transitioned her shooting from high school to the college ranks, leading the team with 11 made three-pointers, knocking them down at a 46 percent clip.
All-time, Memphis and SIU have faced one another 20 times, with Memphis holding a 13-7 advantage. The Salukis have claimed the past two matchups, both single-digit losses for the Tigers.
Scouting the Salukis
SIU hosts Memphis with a 2-1 record, having won its last outing against Tennessee Tech. Four Salukis scored in double-figures, led by Nicole Martin's 19. Southern Illinois attacked the offensive glass in the Saturday win, pulling in 17 offensive boards.
Makenzie Silvey leads the team in scoring, netting 19.3 points per contest, with shooting percentages of 52 percent from the field, 47 percent from three and 75 percent from the free throw line. The Salukis rebound well as a team, outrebounding opponents by eight boards, even though no individual averages more than 5.7 rebounds a game.
As a team, SIU shoots 39 percent from the three-point line, having hit 21 through three games this year. The offense of the Salukis scores almost 86 points per game, with three players averaging double-figure scoring and six total players scoring more than five points per game.
