Women's basketball heads to LA Tech for first roadtrip

The Tigers take on the Lady Techsters Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. CT
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The first road trip of the 2019-20 season is on the horizon as the University of Memphis women's basketball team sets off for Ruston, Louisiana for a non-conference matchup against Louisiana Tech Wednesday evening. Tipoff against the Lady Techsters is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center.

The Tigers are coming off of a tough 63-60 setback to Eastern Kentucky last Saturday. The Colonels capitalized on free throws and second chance opportunities to take the victory against Memphis.

Jamirah Shutes posted her first career double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in the setback. Her 10 rebounds marked a career-high. She has led Memphis in scoring both games this season to continue where she left off in 2018-19.

Madison Griggs stepped it up offensively for the Tigers against Eastern Kentucky, going 3-for-7 from long range to finish with 11 points. Griggs played in 28 minutes for the Tigers. Lanetta Williams continued to be a defensive force down low for Memphis, recording a team-leading three blocks. With eight blocks to-date, Williams leads the American Athletic Conference.

Memphis is 4-10 all-time against Louisiana Tech. The two teams have played in each of the last three years with the series first beginning during the 1978-79 season. The Tigers have a bit of history against Louisiana Tech as Memphis took down No. 1 Louisiana Tech by a score of 72-69 on Feb. 11, 1984 at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Louisiana Tech opened the season up with a 93-61 victory against LSU-Alexandria. The Lady Techsters' seven first-year players combined for 45 points, led by Lotte Sant's 15 and Anna Larr Roberson's 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Grayson Bright led Louisiana Tech in the victory over LSU-Alexandria with 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Collectively, Louisiana Tech shot 39.2 percent from the floor and 69.2 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Techsters pulled down 59 rebounds compared to just 39 by its opponents.

Louisiana Tech also took care of the basketball, only committing 11 turnovers while forcing 20.

The Lady Techsters are under the direction of co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr. Brooke Stoehr helped lead Louisiana Tech to four NCAA Tournaments during her time as a player in Ruston. The duo is currently in their fourth season at the helm of the program.
