Larisey records brace in home victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In his 400th game as the Memphis women's soccer head coach, Brooks Monaghan saw his No. 9/14 Tigers collect their 10th consecutive win after a 2-0 victory against Temple on Sunday afternoon at Park Avenue Campus.
Junior Clarissa Larisey earned a brace in the first half, while the squad pitched its 10th shutout of the season in a physical contest.
"Overall, there were a few highs and lows. We challenged the girls to come out strong. They set the tone with two goals in the first half," Monaghan said. "I feel like we took our foot off the gas and let them back in with some momentum. We challenged the team at halftime to pick it back up, and I thought they did."
It didn't take long for the Tigers (12-1, 4-0) to strike first, as Larisey netted her first goal of the day just 1:28 into the match. Off a corner kick, senior Serena Dolan tapped the incoming ball to Larisey, who found the top of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, the Tigers found their second score when junior Lisa Pechersky drove down the left side of the pitch. Pechersky sent in a cross to Larisey, whose header yielded her 12th score of the season to match her 2018 total.
"She brought some great energy to the game. She's electric when she is on. When she brings that energy, it makes things happen," Monaghan said of the junior. "She earned those two, and probably could have scored more, but the great thing is she is creating them. That work rate alone makes things happen."
In goal, junior keeper Elizabeth Moberg stopped both shots on goal she faced to pick up her eighth shutout of the year. The Tigers' defensive unit limited the Owls (3-7-3, 1-3) to just three shots throughout the afternoon.
Memphis will return to the road for its next two contests. The Tigers will first face Cincinnati on Thursday at 6 p.m. before visiting ECU on Sunday at noon.
