Oct 10, 2019 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Junior Samantha Murphy tallied a brace and senior Stasia Mallin enjoyed a two-assist night as No. 8 Memphis women's soccer pushed its win streak to 11 matches after a 3-0 win at Cincinnati on Thursday evening.
Murphy's two-goal game marked her second brace of the season, while Mallin's helpers gave her 11 on the year and moved her into a tie for fourth all-time in program history with 26.
Despite registering its 11th shutout of the season, the Tigers (13-1, 5-0) were tested early. Cincinnati (4-6-2, 2-1) applied pressure from the first whistle by tallying the first four shots of the game.
The Tigers began to shift momentum after a shot in the 15th minute followed by its first of 11 corner kicks throughout the night. Memphis broke through in the 25th minute via Murphy's fifth goal of the season. As freshman Mya Jones served in a ball from the right side, Murphy redirected the cross and trickled in her first goal of the contest.
"Cincinnati came out flying in the first half. We talked about how much energy they bring in the way they play," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I thought they got the better of us (in the first half). We scored a bit against the run of play, which was great to get that first goal."
Memphis picked up the pace in the second half as Murphy added her second score of the evening a few minutes into the second frame via a corner kick. Off Mallin's corner service, Murphy pushed a shot past the keeper for her sixth score of the season and fourth multiple-goal game of her career.
"Mallin coming out of the back is a huge threat for us offensively. She has been good all year and continues to be," Monaghan said of the senior. "She's a definite threat and I thought she had a really good game tonight."
Mallin helped increase the Tigers' lead in the 59th minute. Intercepting a deep ball at midfield, Mallin began the counter attack. Driving down the middle of the pitch, the senior found Larisey for her team-leading 13th goal of the season and a 3-0 advantage.
"We had a talk at halftime about 'we told you what Cincinnati would bring,' and the kids really responded," Monaghan added of second-half adjustments. "I thought we controlled the second half from the whistle. We turned the table and put them under pressure. I was happy with the way the girls responded."
In net, junior Elizabeth Moberg registered her 12th win of the season behind her ninth shutout of the year. Defensively, Memphis limited Cincinnati to eight shots throughout the night, including just one over the last 50 minutes of play.
Memphis will close its road swing with a visit to ECU on Sunday. Kickoff from Greenville, N.C., is set for noon.
