Women's Basketball Kicks Off Season at Memphis Madness

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In front of a sold-out crowd, the 2019-20 University of Memphis women's basketball team was introduced to fans for the first time Thursday evening as part of Memphis Madness presented by Ashley HomeStore.
"It's about them," said head coach Melissa McFerrin on the evening. "I enjoy it because I see it in their (the players) eyes and how excited they are. We've have had very spirited practices the last couple of days and some pretty spirited competitions. You can see how much all of the players enjoy this."
The evening started on the plaza with a Blue Carpet Experience featuring live music, former player autographs and a photo station. At 7 p.m. sharp, the Mighty Sound of the South kicked off Memphis Madness in the bowl followed up by a performance by the Memphis Cheer and Pom squads.
Before the full team introductions, the Tigers had a special court reveal with a permanent blue court that will be used at the FedExForum for Memphis men's basketball games.
Following the introductions, the two squads participated in an NBA Skills Challenge with freshmen Aerial Wilson and DJ Jeffries coming away victorious. The Tigers then had four members from each squad compete in a three-point competition. Junior Alana Davis took on Lester Quinones in the finals of the three-point competition and came away victorious by a score of 14-13.
Wilson is a four-star point guard from Ontario, Canada started for the Canadian U16 National Team that won the silver medal at the FIBA America Championship.
Davis led the Tigers in rebounding last year with 7.7 boards per game. She also averaged double-digits for the first time in her career with 11.8 points per game. Davis comes into the season with 13 career double-doubles to her name.
The men's squad followed up the skills challenge and the three-point contest with a dunk contest won by freshman guard Damion Baugh and a 15-minute scrimmage.
Moneybagg Yo, Lil' Baby, Future, Famous Amos, Key Glock and Young Dolph all made special appearances during the event.
