Becomes second tight end in program history with 1,000 career receiving yards
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – After becoming only the second tight end in program history to eclipse 1,000 career receiving yards, senior Joey Magnifico has been named an honorable mention for the Mackey Award Tight End of the Week Tuesday afternoon.
The Cordova, Tennessee native was named to the Mackey Award Watch List in July and has continued to make a name for himself this season. Magnifico finished with three catches for 31 receiving yards and his first TD of the season in the victory against Tulane.
Magnifico is just 24 yards shy of matching Alan Cross for the career record for receiving yards by a tight end (1,050). Cross is currently on the Memphis staff as a graduate assistant coach with the offensive line after playing three years in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This season, Magnifico has pulled in 298 receiving yards with a long catch of 58 yards. With 19.9 yards per catch, Magnifico ranks second in the nation among tight ends.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season.
The Tigers return to action Saturday night at Tulsa. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
