Tigers sweep double header against Jackson State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis men's tennis turned in a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 and 4-0 sweep of Jackson State at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

The Tigers improved their record to 4-0, which is the best start to a season since 2012.

In the first match of the day, the Tigers swept the opening doubles point to establish momentum. Memphis then leaned on the bottom of its lineup in singles play to secure the victory.

Freshman Oscar Cutting was first off the court in singles play to earn his third victory of the season. Classmate Patrick Sydow recorded a victory in his first singles contest of the year to drive the lead to 3-0.

Junior Turner Voges, who also made his 2019 singles debut, provided the match-clinching victory in straight sets, while junior Matt Story quickly followed with a victory to set the 5-0 final.

In the second match of the day, Memphis once again built early momentum in doubles. Story and Voges were the first to finish with a 6-1 win, while tandem Sydow and Jan Pallares clinched the opening point with a 6-2 victory. After also being a part of the doubles-clinching point in the first match, Pallares has won the deciding doubles match in all four contests this season.

Senior Chris Patzanovsky and freshman David Stevenson won their lone singles matches of the day in straight sets. Sydow then etched his second singles victory with a 6-3, 6-0 match-clinching win.

Memphis will now shift its focus to the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Tigers will open the weekend against Old Dominion on Saturday at 2 p.m.
