MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Highland Hundred, the official booster club of the Memphis football team, put the final wraps on the 2018 season by hosting its annual year-end banquet at the Ridgeway Hilton, Sunday.
The club honored the 2018 senior class and head coach Mike Norvell handed out the special awards. After honoring the Tigers who all earned American Athletic Conference all-conference honors, the special award winners were presented beginning with the Glenn Jones Scout Team honors.
Quindell Johnson was named the Glenn Jones Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year, while Jeremy Tate, Jr., and Kylan Watkins shared the Glenn Jones Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year award. Kendell Johnson wrapped up the scout team awards with the Glenn Jones Scout Team Special Teams Player of the Year award
The team's Most Improved Offensive Award went to running back Patrick Taylor, who rushed for over 1,000 yards with 16 touchdowns this season. Defensive end Bryce Huff, who led Memphis with 9.5 sacks, received the Defensive Most Improved Player Award.
Curtis Akins, who led the Tigers with 100 tackles this year, was named the John Bramlett Defensive Player of the Year award winner.
The Joey Allison Special Teams Player of the Year Award was awarded to both punt returner Pop Williams and kick return specialist Tony Pollard. Pollard begins practice for the 2019 Senior Bowl on Tuesday in Mobile, Alabama.
On the offensive side of the ball, wide receiver Damonte Coxie and left tackle Trevon Tate shared the Isaac Bruce Offensive Player of the Year award. Tate arrived at the banquet as the event got underway after playing in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.
Running back Darrell Henderson, the program's second consecutive NCAA Consensus All-American, was named the DeAngelo Williams Most Valuable Player. Henderson is in training for the NFL Combine and could not attend this year's banquet.
Senior Drew Kyser earned the team's True Tiger Award for his work in the community, in the classroom and on the field.
