Wilson, two other ex-Trotters, to receive prestigious Legends rings
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former University of Memphis basketball player Michael `Wild Thing' Wilson, known for his uncommon leaping ability while playing for the Tigers, will be among three former Harlem Globetrotters honored as Globetrotter Legends during upcoming stops on the 2019 tour.
Wilson will join fellow honorees Matt `Showbiz' Jackson and Osborne `Goose' Lockhart as receiving Globetrotters Legend rings. Wilson, who played for the Tigers in the mid-1990s, will be presented his ring at the team's show Jan. 18 at FedExForum.
The Legends ring is presented to retired Globetrotters who have made a major contribution to the success and development of the Hall of Fame organization.
Wilson is the current Guinness World Record holder for the highest slam dunk recorded. He set the mark at 12 feet during Final Four Weekend in April 2000. An exhibit at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame recognizes the accomplishment.
Wilson, a Memphis native, played 11 seasons with the Globetrotters and traveled to nearly 60 countries during his tenure. He played from 1994 to '96 with the Tigers and averaged 7.7 points and 3.8 rebounds in 62 games. He started 37 games.
Wilson lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife and three children. He works as Recreation Specialist for D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation.
