MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a 2-0 weekend to open league play, a trio of women's soccer players were named American Athletic Conference Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Samantha Murphy was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, Stasia Mallin was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Elizabeth Moberg was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Week.
Murphy netted three goals in the first weekend of conference play, including both game-winners to defeat Cincinnati and ECU. Murphy scored the game's first two goals against the Bearcats as Memphis claimed a 5-0 win on Thursday.
In the weekend finale, Murphy tallied the Golden Goal in the 93rd minute to help Memphis capture a 2-1 victory against ECU. Murphy's game-winner was her eighth goal of the year and fourth game-winning goal this season. Monday's accolade is Murphy's first weekly league honor of her career.
For the second straight week, Mallin was voted the league's Defensive Player of the Week. The junior tallied two assists, including an assist on the game-winning goal on Sunday. Mallin assisted on the Tigers' third goal in the squad's win against Cincinnati and helped pitch another shutout, the ninth of the season and program-record seventh consecutive clean sheet.
The junior also registered the game-winning assist against ECU, as her pass led to Murphy's Golden Goal in overtime to down the Pirates on Sunday. Mallin now has six helpers on the season and has logged an assist in four straight contests. Monday's honor is the second weekly recognition of her career.
Moberg collected her ninth and 10th wins on the season, after stopping six shots and logging another shutout to open league play. The sophomore made four saves against Cincinnati to record her nation-leading ninth shutout of the season.
On Sunday against ECU, Moberg stopped a pair of shots to help Memphis to its 10th victory of the year. The weekly honor is Moberg's second Goalkeeper of the Week accolade this season, previously garnering the award on Aug. 20. The sophomore was also listed to the league's Honor Roll on Sept. 17.
