UofM looking to build on strong showing at Memphis Intercollegiate
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Less than a week after an impressive finish at the Memphis Intercollegiate, the University of Memphis men's golf team will be in Chicago Sunday and Monday participating in the The Windon Memorial Golf Classic.
Â
The event will be played at Knollwood Country Club and hosted by Northwestern, the defending champion. Among those in the 16-team field with Memphis and Northwestern will be Indiana, Iowa State, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, UCLA and South Florida.
Â
The Tigers nearly won their season-opening, 10-team event at Colonial Country Club by firing a record-tying 13-under par in Tuesday's final round to finish at 11-under 853.
Â
Tigers Bradley Bawden, Chase Harris, Isaiah Jackson and Rodi Vlasveld each shot par at better at Colonial's 7,241-yard layout, with Bawden, Harris and Jackson firing rounds in the 60s. Harris shot a career-best 66, while Bawden finished at 4-under 68 and Jackson at 3-under 69.
Â
Despite their contributions, Memphis was runner-up – by two strokes -- to Chattanooga, which rode the record-setting performance of sophomore Oliver Simonsen. Simonsen shot a final-round 9-under 63, which followed rounds of 64 and 68, to set an Intercollegiate record of 21-under 195.
Â
In Chicago, Memphis coach Blake Smart's lineup will be: Bawden, Harris, Jackson, Vlasveld and freshman Landon Carner from Birmingham, Ala. Carner, participating as an individual at the Memphis Intercollegiate, shot 2-over 218 (74-72-72).
Â
"I'm excited to get back on the road quickly," Smart said. "And I look forward to this new event on our schedule. It is a solid field and a great venue."
Â
Knollwood (par 72, 7,202 yards) is considered one of the premier courses in Illinois. The Club was founded in 1924. Past champions of the tournament include Casey Martin and Luke Donald.
Â
Smart was intrigued by his team's strong finish in the Memphis Intercollegiate. The Tigers entered the final round seven shots behind Chattanooga, but briefly held the lead in the latter stages of the tournament before UTC recovered behind Simonsen.
Â
"We saw some real signs in our first event of being a dynamic team," Smart said. "But the test comes from how often we can repeat that. That test begins with our first road tournament."
