MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Tiger Joe Salisbury's remarkable run in the Gentlemen's Doubles Draw at Wimbledon came to a close Thursday after he and partner Frederik Nielsen dropped a four-set decision to the 13-seeded team of Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus, 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Salisbury, who became the first former Tiger to advance past the third round of a Wimbledon doubles event earlier in the tournament, currently sits at a career-high doubles ranking of No. 41.
Thursday's match began much like Salisbury and Nielsen's quarterfinal round with a tiebreak in the first set. After a back-and-forth to open the tiebreak, Klaasen collected a service winner to lead 7-6 and followed with another point to take the first set.
Salisbury and Nielsen answered to level the match in the second set. Leading 2-1, the duo provided the match's first break point on a backhand winner for a 3-1 lead. Salisbury followed with a hold and then served out the frame to even the match.
Leading 4-3 in the third set, Klaasen and Venus won their first break point of the day to lead 5-3. Venus then held on four consecutive service points for a 2-1 set advantage.
Salisbury's service game helped keep the duo in the fourth set, having held serve in the first and fifth games for a 3-2 lead. Klaasen and Venus evened the set at 3-3 and picked up their second break point for a 4-3 advantage. In the ninth game, Salisbury collected his 12th-consecutive service point to hold once more at 5-4, but Venus closed the set and the match in the ensuing game.
