STARKVILLE, Miss. — A historic season came to a conclusion Friday afternoon, as the No. 21 Memphis men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to South Alabama in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers, who reached their highest team ranking in program history earlier this season at No. 16, finish the year with an 18-6 record.

"It was a good match. It was exactly what you expect in the NCAA Tournament," head coach Paul Goebel said. "It was very hard fought, and both teams were ready to play. I give South Alabama a lot of credit. They kept their composure after losing a close doubles point and fought hard on every court. Unfortunately, it was not our best singles effort today. That is sometimes the way it goes. It has been a good season and we look forward to next season."

Highlighted by a remarkable rally at the top spot, Memphis scored the early advantage in doubles with wins on courts 1 and 3. The Jaguars were first off the court with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 position, but Tiger tandem Jan Pallares and Matthew Story took court 3 with a 6-4 win. Despite trailing 5-1 on court 1, Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson rallied by taking six straight games for a 7-5 victory.

Memphis carried the momentum into singles play, as Peniston was first off the court with a 6-4, 6-1 win.

USA got on the board after taking court 2, but Chris Patzanovsky answered right back with a straight-set win on court 4 to push the Tigers lead to 3-1. Despite the advantage, the Jaguars responded with wins on courts 3 and 6, before a three-set win on court 5 to set the 4-3 final.
