NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship Draw
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis men's tennis senior Ryan Peniston will begin his quest for an individual national championship on Wednesday, as the NCAA released the men's and women's singles and doubles draws.
The three-time all-conference selection will face sophomore Carlos Divar of Georgia Tech in the opening round on Wednesday at 7 a.m. (CT) in Winston-Salem, N.C., on the campus of Wake Forest University. Divar, who has faced 14 nationally-ranked opponents this spring, ranks No. 55 in singles and finished dual match play with a 7-14 record.
"I'm super excited for Ryan and all that he has accomplished. He is such a great representative of the university and of our program," head coach Paul Goebel said. "He has excellent sportsmanship. His competitive spirit on the court is fantastic. Even though he was a good player as a freshman, he's a great example of how hard work and determination can help you improve. To finish his college career at the NCAA singles tournament is very fitting."
Also in Peniston's portion of the draw is American Athletic Conference foe Constantin Schmitz of Tulane. No. 15 Schmitz will play Dayton's Jordan Benjamin in the first round.
Peniston, who ranks No. 36 nationally in singles, becomes the fifth different Tiger to compete in the NCAA singles tournament and first since Phil Chamberlain and Keith West in 1976.
