Former Tiger is one of five players expected to be in NFL Rookie Camps this weekend.
MEMPHIS – Former Memphis offensive lineman Gabe Kuhn was honored by the Memphis chapter of the National Football Foundation at the chapter's annual Black Tie scholar-athlete banquet last week. Kuhn, who graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in journalism, will participate in the New Orleans Saints Rookie Camp tryouts this weekend.
Kuhn, a native of Wildwood, Missouri, and a graduate of Lafayette High School, was a first-team all-conference offensive lineman at Memphis. In four years, Kuhn set a Memphis record for career starts by an offensive lineman, starting 51 games over his career. The versatile lineman started every game in his freshman season in 2014 at center, helping Memphis to a win over BYU in the Miami Beach Bowl. In 2015, Kuhn moved to right guard. He missed the first game of that 2015 season, but started the next 38 straight games, including three bowl games, scattering starts at the tackle and guard positions in his junior campaign in 2016 before starting every game at right guard as a senior in 2017.
With Kuhn anchoring the offensive line, Memphis ranked second in the nation in scoring offense (45.5 ppg) and seventh in the nation with 335.0 passing yards per game. Kuhn also blocked as part of an offensive line that saw sophomore running back Darrell Henderson put the first 1,000-yard rushing season in the books in 2017. Henderson finished with 1,154 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in 12 games, missing the AutoZone Liberty Bowl due to injury.
Kuhn is one of a quintet of Tigers expected to participate in rookie camp tryouts this weekend. Former teammates Riley Ferguson and Christian Johnson will participate in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' rookie tryouts this weekend, while teammate Anthony Miller attends the Chicago Bears' camp as a draftee. Kicker and punter Spencer Smith is expected to attend the Cincinnati Bengals rookie camp. Former Tiger teammates Genard Avery and Phil Mayhue participated in rookie camps last weekend, Avery as a draftee for the Cleveland Browns and Mayhue as a rookie candidate for the New York Jets.
This will be the second straight season Memphis has had a former Tiger in a Saints' rookie camp. Last year, Arthur Maulet attended rookie camp as a free agent under contract. Maulet made it onto the Saints' active roster in two different stints in 2016, appearing in six total games, including two playoff games.
The Memphis chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, Inc., was established in 1963 and holds an annual dinner at Rhodes College where they recognize 11 high school and two college football players in the Memphis area based on athletics, academics and community service. Membership in the local chapter includes voting on current nominees for induction to the College Football Hall of Fame and free passes to the museum and quarterly newsletters.
