Memphis opens play against Rice Thursday
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Seeking to build on a three-match win streak, the No. 24/23 Memphis men's tennis team travels to the West Coast for the eighth annual San Diego Spring Classic.
The Tigers (8-4, 2-0) begin play against the Rice Owls on Thursday at 4 p.m. (CT). Memphis enters the eight-team, bracket-format invitational as the highest ranked team.
Co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State University, Memphis' bracket also includes No. 44 San Diego and No. 46 Utah State. The tournament also features opening-round matchups between No. 25 Harvard and San Diego State along with No. 37 Texas Tech and No. 51 Arizona.
In its last outing, Memphis swept then-No. 14 Oklahoma State on Sunday for its third-highest ranked win in program history. After winning doubles, seniors Andrew Watson and Ryan Peniston turned in straight-set wins in singles, while sophomore Jan Pallares provided the clinch to set the 4-0 final.
Peniston, who ranks No. 63 nationally in singles play, is coming off a 4-0 week that landed him as the American Athletic Conference men's tennis player of the week for the third time this season. Peniston's last two singles matches yielded a pair of ranked wins, including his highest-ranked career win against No. 15 Constantin Schmitz of Tulane.
Rice (5-9, 0-1) has dropped three of its last four contests. Eric Rutledge leads the Owls with an 8-2 record in singles play, including a 7-1 mark at the top spot.
Although the Owls lead the all-time series by a 6-2 margin, the Tigers have won the last two meetings in 2012 and 2013.
