Feb 15, 2018 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Seeking to build on the momentum of a two match win streak, the Memphis men's tennis team travels to Michigan for a pair of Big Ten contests this weekend.
The Tigers (4-2) face Michigan State on Friday at 5 p.m. before closing the weekend with a match against No. 13 Michigan on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Tigers' No. 61-ranked Ryan Peniston turned in a 4-0 individual mark last weekend against Cornell and Penn State. Peniston, who was named the league's men's tennis player of the week, provided the match-clinching point in both contests.
Junior Felix Rauch has won his previous three decisions in singles play, beginning with his match-clinching win against Arkansas to start the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Rauch was first off the court in Memphis' sweep of Cornell last weekend. The Germany native has also teamed up with sophomore Jan Pallares in doubles play, where the duo has compiled a 3-0 record in dual match play.
Michigan State (4-6) snapped a three-match skid with a 7-0 shutout against Niagara last Sunday. Freshman John Carlin has posted a 4-2 singles record in dual match play and is riding a two-match win streak. Senior Brett Forman anchors the top court in singles with a 3-6 mark. Forman and senior Jasper Koenen have registered a 6-2 record for the Spartans in doubles, all coming at the No. 1 position.
The Wolverines (5-2) are coming off a 2-1 weekend. After dropping a match to No. 11 Florida, Michigan rallied with wins against No. 23 Cal and Harvard. The Wolverines feature three ranked singles players in senior Alex Knight (No. 3), senior Runhao Hua (No. 42) and junior Myles Schalet (No. 113). Knight and Hua also team up in doubles at the top spot, where the duo ranks No. 9 nationally.
The Tigers hold an 8-0 record all-time against Michigan State, while Michigan won the lone meeting with Memphis in 2015. The Tigers are 16-8 all-time against Big Ten opponents, including a pair of wins against Indiana and Penn State earlier this season.
