Tigers look to use match as springboard into postseason.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis rifle squad heads back out on the road Sunday, this time traveling an hour south to Oxford, Miss., to face Ole Miss in a final match before postseason begins next weekend.
Â
Sunday's action starts at 9 a.m. (CT) at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. Memphis is ranked No. 16 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, and Ole Miss is No. 8.
Â
Although shooting in their third-straight competition away from the Bluff City, the Tigers have enjoyed their time on the road in 2017-18, posting some of their top team aggregate scores.
Â
Two weeks ago at Kentucky (Jan. 27), Memphis shot a 4650 aggregate, the team's second-highest score of the campaign. The week prior at the Jan. 20 Withrow Invitational, the Tigers shot a 4646, their third-best aggregate of the season. Memphis shot a season-high 4664 aggregate in a match at TCU Oct. 28, 2017.
Â
Head coach Dan Hermsmeier
"It was a great match (at Kentucky) for us. Our shooters are doing a great job. They're starting to understand what we're doing in practice. I'm looking forward to the next few weeks and next year.
Â
"We had a good performance at Kentucky. We know there is still more in us. We're doing more specific training to get rid of our bad habits.
Â
"Sunday will be a great match with Ole Miss. The Rebels are doing really well. It will be a good head-to-head match-up as we go into the postseason next week. The rifle scores across the country are up this year, so we have to give it all we have to shoot our best every day."
