Memphis hosts Bulldogs in third of six-straight home contests
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team enters game three of its six-game home stand to face Samford on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m., at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Memphis continues its play at home following a close, hard-fought setback against New Orleans last Tuesday. Freshman guard Jamirah Shutes paced the squad with 16 points, marking the fourth time this season she has led Memphis in scoring.

Alana Davis also made an impact, logging her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Davis ranks tied for 22nd all-time in program history with eight career double-doubles. Â Â

Shutes continues to lead the Tigers in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per contest. Her average currently ranks 10th in the American Athletic Conference, and is second-highest among freshmen in The American.

Averaging a double-double, Davis is second on the team with 12.8 points per outing, and leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 10.0 rebounds per game. Davis has pulled down 80 rebounds this season, which rank third in The American. Nationally, Davis ranks fifth in the nation averaging 5.4 offensive rebounds per game.

Scouting the Bulldogs
Samford visits Memphis after suffering a 66-41 defeat against UAB in its most recent game. Samantha Fitzgerald led the team in scoring, netting 11 on the night.

Three Bulldogs are neck-and-neck for leading the team in scoring, the three players being separated by only two points. Natalie Armstrong, Paige Serup, and Fitzgerald have scored 76, 75, and 74 points, respectively, on the year. As a team, Samford shoots 35.2 percent from beyond the arc, which is tops in the Southern Conference.

Mike Morris is the head coach for Samford, and has been so since 2002. Morris has led the Bulldogs to three national postseason tournaments, including back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2011 and 2012.

Samford and Memphis have played one another four times, the last time on Nov. 13, 2016 in Birmingham. Samford is currently 3-1 in those contests, with the Tigers picking up a 64-48 win at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse in 2014. Samford has never won by more than eight points.
