The Tigers hit the road for the first time since the Thanksgiving trip to the Coastal Carolina Tournament, having played six consecutive games at home during the month of December. Most recently, Memphis defeated North Carolina Central on Saturday by a 77-56 margin. Several Tigers put up notable stat lines in the game, including career-highs for Taylor Barnes (11 assists) and Jasmine James (16 points). Jamirah Shutes also led the Tigers in scoring for the sixth time this season, netting 18 points.
Shutes, just a freshman, leads the Tigers in scoring with 14.6 points per game. Her 14.6 points per contest rank eighth in the American Athletic Conference and first among freshmen in the league. Two other Tigers score in double-figures, with Alana Davis scoring 13.0 points per outing, and Taylor Barnes netting 10.2 per game.
Davis ranks at the top of the team in rebounding, pulling down 9.3 boards per contest. Davis ranks eighth in the country on the offensive boards, picking up 4.9 rebounds each contest. She also leads the team shooting .550 percent from the field, good enough for fifth in the conference.
Scouting the Colonials
George Washington hosts the Tigers currently on a five-game losing streak, having dropped its most recent game against William and Mary on Saturday by a 73-59 score.
Mei-Lyn Bautista leads the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game. She is the only Colonial averaging at least 10 points per game. Bautista and teammate Kelsi Mahoney have sunk a combined 48 of the team's 69 three-pointers. On the defensive end, George Washington holds its opponents to 27 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Bautista also leads the team in assists, dishing out 41 helpers on the year. She carries a 1.46 assist-to-turnover ratio. Bautista and Mahoney both carry assist-to-turnover ratios over 1.0.
The Tigers and George Washington have played each other twice, playing in back to back years in 2014-15. The Colonials have claimed victory in both of those previous games. Head coach of George Washington is Jennifer Rizzotti who is in the midst of her third season.
