MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's soccer assistant coach Jonny Walker has been promoted to the program's associate head coach, Tigers' head coach Brooks Monaghan announced Friday.
Walker, who just concluded his 10th season on staff, most recently helped the Tigers to their first American Athletic Conference championship this season. Since joining the staff in 2009, Memphis has recorded 135 victories and five NCAA Tournament appearances.
"One of the important things in being as good of a coach as you can is surrounding yourself with the best people that you possibly can. The people around us not only make us who we are but make us better," Monaghan said. "Our whole coaching staff is a unit. We don't look at someone being more important than the other. We all share the responsibilities that make up a winning program. With Jonny being with me for 10 years now, it's the least I can do for him. It's something that is very well deserved."
Primarily working with goalkeepers and the defensive unit, Walker has consistently groomed successful players between the posts. In individual seasons, Walker's players own five of the top six records in goalkeeping victories, four of the top five records in goals-against average and the top three records in shutouts.
Most recently, goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg posted a .76 goals-against mark and 13 shutouts, which both rank second in single-season history. Moberg earned Second Team All-Conference honors and was named Third Team United Soccer Coaches' All-South Region. The sophomore also won the league's Goalkeeper of the Week accolade on three occasions this year.
In addition to his work with the goalkeepers, Walker has a large impact on the entire defensive unit. Since 2009 the Tigers have had five defenders recognized on all-conference teams a total of 13 times. In 2018, defender Olivia Gauthier earned the program's first American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year award and was voted a United Soccer Coaches All-American.
