Henderson Named Memphis’ First Unanimous All-American
Dec 13, 2018 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis junior running back Darrell Henderson was unanimously selected to the NCAA Consensus All-America team, becoming the first unanimous selection in program history. Henderson joins wide receiver Anthony Miller (2017), punter Tom Hornsey (2013) and placekicker Joe Allison (1992) as Memphis' only Consensus All-Americans.
The Batesville, Miss., product received first-team All-America honors from the five outlets that comprise the NCAA Consensus All-America team: American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Walter Camp.
Henderson also picked up All-America nods from Bleacher Report, CBS Sports, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and USA Today. He also finished 10th in Heisman Trophy balloting, the highest finish by a Memphis player since DeAngelo Williams placed seventh in 2005.
The nation's most explosive back, Henderson leads the FBS with 25 touchdowns, 15 total plays of 40-plus yards and 8.9 yards per carry (min. 125 carries). His 1,909 rushing yards this season rank second in the country. The 1,909 rushing yards this season are the third-most in program history, 22 rushing touchdowns ties for first and his 25 touchdowns are a single-season program record.
He stands as the second-leading rusher in program history with 3,545 career yards and has scored the second-most touchdowns in program history with 45.
Henderson announced Wednesday that he plans to forgo his senior season at Memphis and declare for the 2019 NFL Draft.
Memphis will face Wake Forest in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. CT. For ticket and bowl information, visit GoTigersGo.com/Bowl.
The following players were listed on the most first team All-America teams competing against players at that position only. To be selected a player must be named first team on at least two of the five selected All-America teams. Second teams were used to break ties. Eight players were unanimous choices at specific positions by the five organizations used in the consensus chart — American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Foundation. Note: Each of the five teams has a different way of listing the returner or all-purpose player. For the purpose of the Consensus All-America team those categories were treated as one position.
