Alana Davis tallies third double-double of the season in loss
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought game to the Toledo Rockets Saturday afternoon. After a two-game absence due to illness, Jamirah Shutes came back to lead the team with 15 points and four assists.
After a nine-point first half deficit, Memphis battled back in the third quarter, but ultimately didn't have enough to get it done, falling to the Rockets 58-48.
Alana Davis registered her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. She has seven double-doubles in her career at Memphis.
The game started slowly for both squads, as each team struggled to make their first baskets. Shutes sparked the Tigers offense with a layup midway through the quarter. She added a three-pointer later in the quarter, scoring five of the Tigers' seven first quarter points.
As the game entered the second quarter, the offenses slowed for both teams, and both teams struggled to finish opportunities. Memphis, for its part, crashed the offensive glass with a purpose, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds in the half. Davis had six offensive boards of her own through the first 20 minutes of game time.
Midway through the third quarter, Davis scored a layup, giving her 10 points, completing her third double-double of the season. The Tigers would outscore the Rockets by seven in the quarter to trim the lead to just two heading into the final period.
Memphis clawed away at the Rockets lead and ultimately tied the contest at 40-all, but Toledo kept the Memphis offense from regaining the lead by hitting timely shots to keep Memphis at bay.
The Tigers will hit the floor again on Tuesday, taking on the University of New Orleans at 5:30 p.m. for the second of six in a row at home for the Tigers. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow us on Twitter at @MemphisWBB.
