Tigers offensive line coach a nominee for top assistant coach award
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Assistant Head Coach Ryan Silverfield has been nominated for the Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coach.
The Tigers' offensive line coach and run game coordinator, Silverfield has coached the team's most consistent unit this season with all five starters playing in every game.
The Tigers unit, consisting of LT Trevon Tate, LG Dylan Parham, C Drew Kyser, RG Dustin Woodard and RT Roger Joseph has paved the way for an offense that ranks in the Top 10 in rushing, total offense and scoring offense.
Memphis ranks sixth in the FBS with 267.2 rushing yards per game and eighth in total offense with 535.6 yards per game. The Tigers average 44.3 points per game, which ranks seventh. Memphis' 31 rushing touchdowns this season are the second-most in the FBS.
The nation's second-leading rusher, Darrell Henderson, has compiled 1,280 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns. Henderson is the nation's most explosive back, with 9.48 yards-per-carry and nine rushes of 40-plus yards.
Over the last three seasons, Silverfield's offensive line has helped the Tigers produce numerous school records. Last season, Memphis set single-season program records with 4,355 passing yards and 39 touchdowns. The Tigers also scored a program-record 592 points in 2017. This season, Memphis is on pace to surpass the program record for rushing touchdowns in a season of 33.
A 19-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, along with a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semifinalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner. Those finalists will be invited to travel to Little Rock, Ark., where the 2018 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 4 at the Marriott Hotel.
The winner of the 2018 Broyles Award was Tony Elliott, co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Clemson. Winners from the past five seasons are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award.
This year marks the third time the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation has presented the award. Proceeds from the 2018 Broyles Award support the mission of the Broyles Foundation; to provide education, support, and resources to Alzheimer's caregivers.
