After falling behind 1-0 in the quarterfinal against USF on Tuesday, David Zalzman, Chris Mikus, and Gurman Sangha combined for three unanswered goals, propelling Memphis to the win.
Freshman goalkeeper Parker Lackland had a career-high seven saves in the match, including several that were point blank shots from the Bulls. Lackland's final save of the match came with 18 seconds remaining, putting the cherry on top of Memphis' first AAC Championship win.
The Tigers now turn their attention to SMU, who defeated Memphis 3-0 in the regular season. Though Memphis matched the Mustangs shot for shot, the inability to put shots on goal is what ultimately led to the defeat. Head coach Richard Mulrooney said after Tuesday's win that "SMU will be a tough task for us, but it's one I know the guys can handle."
Scouting the Mustangs
SMU captured a share of the AAC regular season title after defeating Temple in its last outing. Claiming the number two seed, the Mustangs earned themselves a first-round bye for the conference tournament.
The Mustangs are led on the pitch by Emil Cuello, who leads the team with 16 points. Cuello and Akean Shackleford have both scored five goals on the year, tied for tops on the roster. In the net, Grant Makela was named Second Team All-Conference after allowing just 11 goals and registering six shutouts.
Head coach of SMU is Kevin Hudson, now in his 4th season at the helm. He looks to lead his team to back-to-back AAC Championship titles after winning it all last season.
