International talent rounds out 2019 signing class
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's soccer added the signing of international standout Isabella Mattsson, head coach Brooks Monaghan announced Tuesday.
A 5'6" forward, Mattsson is a native of Mariehamn, Åland Island, Finland. She will enroll and join the Tiger program this spring.
"We're extremely excited to add Isabella this spring," Monaghan said. "First of all, to bring in a player in the spring is an added bonus. There's the opportunity to get comfortable and get your feet wet more than the average freshman."
Prepping with Åland United, Mattsson helped her squad to a bronze medal at the 2018 Finnish national championships and was a member of the Finnish U18 national team in 2017 and 2018. She also won the Silver Ball in three consecutive seasons (2016-18), which is awarded to the best junior player in the Åland region.
"We see her as an outside mid or a forward with the capability of scoring goals, which she has proven at the highest level in Finland," Monaghan added. "She's athletic and has a very high soccer IQ. The biggest thing is being able to bring in a player from a professional environment. We are basically adding a pro to our team."
Off the pitch, the forward also played handball and floorball. The daughter of Anders and Catrine Mattsson, Isabella said she chose Memphis for its strong women's soccer program and good academics.
Mattsson caps the 2019 signing class for the Tigers. Memphis inked nine student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play for the Tigers last week.
