Oct 06, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Memphis women's tennis added seven wins to its weekend total at the Samford Round Robin on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers began the day with a doubles win against South Alabama and added a win in an intrasquad matchup. In singles, Memphis tallied five wins against UAB to cap the day.
"We're still looking to improve our doubles a little, but overall it was another strong day for the Tigers," head coach Hayden Perez said. "The girls competed hard at every position today and I was proud of our efforts."
In doubles, Memphis duo Katherine Cao and Hannah Davies tallied a 6-3 win. Juniors Josephine Cao and Claire Sullivan also teamed up for a 6-3 win against teammates Lina Hohnhold and Aleks Topalovic.
Sophomore Laura Bente notched her second weekend win in singles play, registering a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Classmate Alisha Reayer also took a straight-set decision, 6-4, 6-4.
In her second win of the day, Davies outlasted UAB's Megan Bertrands in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Josephine Cao also recorded a three-set victory, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, while Hohnhold defeated Hana Sisirak of UAB, 6-1, 6-1.
The Tigers will be back in action Sunday for the final day of the Samford Round Robin, with doubles getting underway at 10 a.m.
"We showed some real grit today. Several kids were down in sets or matches and fought hard to get back into them," Perez said. "We are hoping to be at our best on day three of the tournament tomorrow."
