MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After two successful tournaments to open the season, the Lady Tigers golf team is back in action, this time competing in the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, a 12-team tournament hosted by the University of Kentucky. The tournament, now in its 29th year, will take place in Lexington, Kentucky on the Big Blue Course. The first of the competitors will tee off on the par 72 course at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.
This is the first time any of the Lady Tigers will compete in this tournament, as the tournament is in its second consecutive season after a five-season gap in play from 2012-2016. However, this will be the 20th time that the Tigers have played in this tournament, having won the tournament in 2006.
The team is coming off two strong performances, opening the season with a team and individual victory at the Payne Stewart Memorial tournament, as well as a tie for seventh overall at the Lady Paladin Invitational against nationally-ranked competitors. Sydney Colwill won the Payne Stewart Memorial on the second-hole of a sudden death playoff.
The contingent representing Memphis in Lexington is led by redshirt senior Michaela Fletcher and fellow seniors, Colwill and Madison Thomas. Abby Herrmann and Julia Matzat round out the scoring five representing Memphis.
Last time Fletcher was on the course, she led the Tigers with a tie for a 12th place finish at the Lady Paladin Invitational. Colwill and Thomas finished tied for 33rd and 35th respectively. Herrmann shot 226 over the 54-hole course in Greenville, S.C. Matzat makes her scoring debut for the Tigers this season, after putting together a strong performance at the Payne Stewart Memorial with a score of 238.
Freshman Victoria Gallegos will be competing in her second collegiate tournament as an individual. She tees off on Friday at 10:12 with other individual players from Middle Tennessee State and Kentucky.
The three-day event will feature 18 holes of golf played each day on the 5,947-yard course. The first round for the Tigers will be at 10:30 a.m. ET on Friday, as they are paired with Middle Tennessee State and Toledo. The final round will begin on Sunday at the same time with a shotgun start. Other teams in the 12-team field include Akron, Columbia, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Indianapolis, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Western Kentucky. Live scoring for the tournament will be made available at Golfstat.com.
