Jamirah Shutes and Malainna 'Rudy' White win the skills challenge, three-point contest
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Thursday night marked the first time Tigers fans got to see the 2018-19 University of Memphis women's and men's basketball teams in person as part of the Memphis Madness presented by Ashley HomeStore festivities in front of a sold out crowd at FedExForum.
Â
"I just think this is the most electric atmosphere that you can find across the country," said head coach Melissa McFerrin. "Our fans here show us a lot of love and we are appreciative of them."
Â
"It really means a lot to have everyone come out and see us," added Taylor Barnes.
Â
The evening started on the plaza with a Blue Carpet Experience featuring live music, former player autographs and a photo station. At 7 p.m. sharp, the Mighty Sound of the South kicked off Memphis Madness in the bowl followed up by a performance by the Memphis Cheer and Pom squads.
Â
Before the full team introductions, the Tigers had a special court reveal with an all black court used exclusively for Memphis Madness.
Â
Following the introductions, the two squads participated in an NBA Skills Challenge with freshmen Alex Lomax and Jamirah Shutes coming away victorious.  The Tigers then had five members from each squad compete in a three-point competition – won by freshmen Malianna 'Rudy' White and David Wingett.
Â
Shutes finished her dominating high school career with over 3,000 points scored. White had a stellar senior season, averaging 22 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists per game.
Â
The men's squad followed up the skills challenge and the three-point contest with a dunk contest won by freshman guard Ryan Boyce and a 15-minute scrimmage.
Â
Moneybagg Yo, Derez Deshon, Blocboy JB, and Yo Gotti all made special appearances during the event. Â
