Streaking Tulsa is next challenge for Tigers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After opening conference play with two road games for the first time in 11 seasons, the University of Memphis returns home to FedExForum at 3 p.m. Saturday for an American Athletic Conference game against Tulsa.
The Tigers (9-6, 0-2 AAC) will attempt to snap their three-game losing streak, which began Dec. 28 with a 10-point loss at home to LSU. Memphis opened AAC play with losses at Cincinnati and UCF.
Tulsa, like Cincinnati and UCF, presents a challenge. The Golden Hurricane (10-5, 3-0) is coming off a 90-88 double-overtime victory at home against UConn, a game in which Tulsa connected on a league-record 17 3-pointers. Tulsa has won six of its last seven games.
The Golden Hurricane is led by Junior Etou, who was named AAC Player of the Week for averaging 17.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists last week in league wins over East Carolina and Tulane. Corey Henderson directed the victory over UConn by scoring a career-high 30 points. He finished with eight 3-pointers, including two in the final 22 seconds of regulation to force overtime.
"Tulsa is coming off a big-time win over Connecticut," Tiger coach Tubby Smith said. "I'm sure they are playing with a lot of confidence. Right now, we are struggling to find our way."
The Tigers will look to bounce back from Wednesday's league loss at UCF. Memphis led at the half and early in the second half before falling to the Knights, 65-56.
"Coming off that tough loss at Central Florida, I thought we were right in the game (until) we made some mistakes down the stretch that cost us," Smith said. "Otherwise, I thought we got some good play out of Mike Parks and some other guys."
Parks, Kareem Brewton Jr., Raynere Thornton and Victor Enoh had solid efforts against the Knights. Brewton led the Tigers with 15 points off the bench, Thornton had a team-high nine rebounds and Enoh scored a season-high six points.
After beginning the conference season with the two road games, the Tigers will play three of their next four league games at FedExForum. Tulane visits Tuesday and UConn comes to Memphis Jan. 16. The Tigers play at Temple Jan. 13.
