Tigers Post 86-74 Win On The Road At USF

TAMPA ā The University of Memphis was in a giving mood Wednesday night.

After finishing with only four assists in each of their past two games ā losses to Tulsa and Cincinnati ā the Tigers dished out 20 assists in an 86-74 American Athletic Conference victory over USF at the Sun Dome.

The win snapped a two-game Memphis losing streak and improved the team's record at USF to 11-2 overall. The Tigers (14-8, 5-4 American) own a 25-4 lead in the series.

Jeremiah Martin led the Tigers with 25 points and added nine assists. Kyvon Davenport finished with a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds), and Jamal Johnson had 18 points to tie his career high.Ā Reserve center Karim Sameh Azab scored the first points of his career and finished with six points on 3-of-3 shooting.

The Tigers opened the second half with an 8-3 run powered by 3-pointers from Johnson and Martin to build a 15-point lead (50-35). After four scoreless possessions to start the half, Johnson buried a trey, Martin followed with another and Martin capped the run with a steal and a layup.

Johnson's 3-pointer started a 12-0 run that gave Memphis a 54-35 lead with 14 minutes left. The Tigers eventually went ahead by 21 (58-37) a few possessions later on a corner jumper by Johnson.

The Tigers led 42-32 at the half by shooting 51.4 percent and dishing out 12 assists on 18 made field goals.

Memphis jumped to an early 16-10 lead after a Jimario Rivers' fastbreak layup and eventually built a 12-point lead (42-30) in the closing two minutes of the opening half.

Rivers made his first start since New Year's Eve at Cincinnati and had three assists in the first 20 minutes.

Johnson and Davenport each had eight points in the first half. Johnson had two 3-pointers, his first treys after going 0-5 from long range the past two games.
