Dan Lanning and Marcus Woodson leave Memphis to explore other opportunities
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Assistant football coaches Dan Lanning and Marcus Woodson have left the University of Memphis to pursue other opportunities, Memphis head coach Mike Norvell announced Wednesday.
"I am grateful for the contributions that both Dan and Marcus had in our first two years in Memphis and I wish them both all the best in their future opportunities," Norvell said. "Both men were great representatives of our program, university, and the city of Memphis and I look forward to seeing them achieve great success in their futures."
Lanning has overseen the development of two-time all-conference linebacker Genard Avery the last two seasons. Avery finished his Tiger career second in program history with 45.5 tackles for loss and third all-time at Memphis with 21.5 career sacks.
Also under Lanning in 2017, linebacker Curtis Akins finished with the team lead in tackles (88) and breakout redshirt freshman Tim Hart record 49 total tackles and had an interception return for a touchdown in the win over UCLA.
Woodson tutored 2017 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and freshman All-American TJ Carter, who set a freshman program record with five interceptions. Carter finished the season with 69 total tackles and 11 pass breakups.
Last season, Woodson oversaw the growth of cornerback Arthur Maulet. Maulet recorded 72 tackles, two interceptions and a team-high 13 pass breakups, before signing as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints.
