KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A gallant effort fell short Saturday afternoon, as the Memphis women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Tennessee at Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville.
Memphis will face ETSU Sunday morning to cap weekend play.
"I am very proud of the girls today. They competed hard and can hold their heads high," head coach Hayden Perez said. "Tennessee earned this win and we made them play some tough tennis. I am looking forward to taking on ETSU tomorrow."
The Tigers opened the day with a strong effort on the doubles point. Despite a loss on court 1, Memphis duo Claire Sullivan and Josephine Cao answered at the No. 3 position, downing Tennessee tandem Tenika McGiffin and Chelsea Sawyer by a score of 6-3. Tiger pair Hanna Sohn and Katherine Cao forced a 6-6 tie on court 2, but dropped the tiebreaker 7-2 to give the Vols the early 1-0 match advantage.
Tennessee took the doubles momentum over to singles play. The Vols claimed the first four singles matches before freshman Laura Bente took court 2. Down 2-6, Bente rallied to win set two 6-4 and claimed a 10-8 tiebreak victory in the third set for the win.
The Tigers' first serve Sunday against the Buccaneers is set for 9 a.m. The two programs have split the all-time series with a 2-2 record, but the Tigers have taken two of the last three matchups.
