Memphis, Tenn. – Following a weekend sweep to start the season, the University of Memphis women's tennis team hits the road for a pair of in-state showdowns in Knoxville.
The Tigers open the weekend Saturday against the Tennessee Volunteers (2-0) with first serve slated for 10 a.m. (CT), before meeting the Buccaneers of ETSU (0-1) on Sunday at 9 a.m. (CT).
"Tennessee is going to present a big challenge," head coach Hayden Perez said of the weekend opener. "We have four SEC schools on our schedule this year. They are one of those that are pretty tough. ETSU will offer some great challenges as well. We have our hands full but will be ready for it."
Memphis claimed a double-header sweep of UAB and UT Martin to open its season last weekend. Senior Anki Wind led the way with a pair of straight-set singles victories and a doubles win alongside freshman Laura Bente. Newcomers Claire Sullivan, Lina Hohnhold and Bente also seek to build upon impressive starts, as the trio posted a combined record of 7-2 in singles and doubles action last weekend.
Saturday's match will be the season home opener for the Volunteers, as the Vols took down Old Dominion and William and Mary on the road last weekend. Sophomore Ariadna Riley clinched both matches for the Volunteers, while Sadie Hammond, Gabby Schuck and Kaitlin Staines also went 2-0 in singles play on the weekend.
Tennessee leads the all-time series with a 7-0 record. Saturday's match will also mark the first time the two programs have met since 1982.
