Brewton Jr.'s Buzzer-Beating Triple Lifts Tigers To Win
Jan 13, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Memphis wins third-straight with 75-72 OT victory over Temple Saturday.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Kareem Brewton Jr. drained a deep 3-pointer in the closing seconds of overtime to lift the University of Memphis to a 75-72 American Athletic Conference victory over Temple Saturday.
Brewton finished with 10 points, but no three bigger in his first season at the UofM. The victory was the Tigers' first road win of the season and the first in nearly a year.
"He got a good clean look, got it off and it went in," said Tigers head coach Tubby Smith. "It would have been devastating if we had lost because we had it in our hands."
Jeremiah Martin led the Tigers with 26 points, while Mike Parks Jr. scored 12 and grabbed seven rebounds. Kyvon Davenport finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Brewton's game-winner came after his attempted pass to Jimario Rivers was deflected back to him by Temple's Ernest Aflakpui. Brewton quickly grabbed the ball and tossed up the long-range shot several feet beyond the arc.
"I work on that shot at practice," Brewton said. "It felt good coming out of my hand. When your name is called you have to be ready."
Brewton's shot gave the Tigers a 73-72 lead with 0.7 seconds left. Memphis players and coaches -- thinking the game was over -- rushed the court to congratulate Brewton. On Temple's ensuing throw-in, the ball was passed out of bounds. On Memphis's thrown-in, Rivers was fouled and sank both free throws for the final margin.
The Tigers (12-6, 3-2 AAC) shot 52.4 percent in the second half and 47.5 percent for the game to win their third straight league game. They also out-rebounded Temple, 47-38.
Temple (8-9, 1-5 AAC) was led by Nate Pierre-Louis, who had 23 points.
Memphis built its largest lead (nine points, 55-46) with six minutes left on a free throw by Brewton. The free throw capped a 10-0 run.
Earlier in the half, the Tigers had used an 11-0 run to go up, 43-37.
But Temple battled back to force overtime behind Pierre-Louis, who scored 15 of his points in the final 12 minutes of regulation and overtime.
Temple was coming off an impressive 66-64 win Wednesday night at SMU in which the Owls used a last-second jumper by Josh Brown to beat the Mustangs and end their 33-game home winning streak. The Owls had lost five straight before the upset win in Dallas.
The Tigers overcame 10 first-half turnovers to trail by only one (31-30) at the half. Memphis also outrebounded the Owls, 23-17, in the opening 20 minutes and got 13 points from Martin.
Five of the U of M's turnovers came in the first five minutes, but the Tigers survived.
Trailing by five (25-20) with 5:50 to go in the first half, Rivers and Martin scored on layups. In the final two minutes, a Rivers' dunk and two baskets from Parks – a layup and a short baseline jumper – gave the Tigers a brief 30-29 lead. Aflakpui scored on a put-back in the closing seconds to give Temple its halftime lead.
The Tigers shot 44.8 percent in the first half. Temple shot 35.1 percent.
Memphis resumes conference play Tuesday night at 8 p.m. (CT) when it hosts Connecticut at FedExForum.
