Fletcher and Women’s Golf Claim Season-Opening Win

Memphis wins Payne Stewart Memorial in season opener.

MEMPHIS – Junior women's golfer Michaela Fletcher carded a third round 71 and was the lone golfer to finish under par in a wire-to-wire win at the Missouri State/Payne Stewart Memorial, Tuesday. Fletcher's third round 71 gave her a 212 for the event, a six stroke win over Wichita State's Taryn Togerson.

As a team, Memphis placed three golfers in the top five in the 14 stroke victory. Memphis fired a 294 on Tuesday morning to finish with 874 (+22) for the tournament win. Murray State finished second at 888, while UTEP finished third at 896.

Junior Sydney Colwill was Memphis' second-leading scorer, firing a 71 on Tuesday to finish third with a 219 (+6). Teammate Emily Goldenstein was two strokes back at 221, good for a fourth place finish.
Abby Herrmann rounded out the top four scorers for Memphis. Herrmann finished tied for 11^th with a 224 after a third round 77. Madison Thomas was the final team score, also firing a 77 to finish with a 231, good for 39^th overall.

The women's golf team will continue its fall slate later this month at the Lady Paladin Invitational. That tournament will be played Sept. 22-23 and also features a little different angle. Teams have been invited to fundraise for wells in Zambia through the Golf Fore Africa Foundation.
