Tee times begin at 9:45 a.m. Friday.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's golf team won its first event of the year and are back on the course in competition this weekend at the 2017 Lady Paladin Invitational, starting Friday. Memphis is one of 17 teams playing in the event in Greenville, South Carolina, that tees off Friday at 11 a.m.
Junior Michaela Fletcher claimed individual medalist honors in Memphis' first event of the season and leads a five-player contingent at the Lady Paladin Invitational this weekend. Fellow seniors Sydney Colwill and Madison Thomas will join Fletcher in the lineup, while senior Emily Goldenstein and sophomore Abby Herrmann round of the Memphis lineup.
The competition at the Lady Paladin event will be stronger than the Lady Tigers' opening event. At the Missouri State tournament to start the year, Memphis was the top-ranked team in the field at number 74. At this weekend's event, host Furman is ranked number seven in the country and Augusta (42), LSU (64), Ole Miss (69) and East Tennessee State (72) all rank above Memphis in the GolfStat rankings.
Off the course, the teams have all been competing before they even got to the event. Every participating team was invited to fundraise for Golf Fore Africa, an organization that helps provide clean water to those in need in Africa. To date, the 501(c)(3) has raised over $2.5 million to fund projects to bring fresh water to villages in Rwanda, Lesotho, Kenya, Mali, Niger and Zambia. Memphis is currently third in that event, having raised over $800 and working toward a team goal of $1,000 before teeing off Friday morning. Fans who want to help Memphis hit their fundraising goal can donate HERE.
Memphis' tee times in the event begin at 9:45 a.m and the Lady Tigers will be paired with players from Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State. Live scoring will be available at www.BirdieFire.com.
