Women’s Soccer Cruises To 6-0 Shutout Victory Over Rhode Island
Sep 01, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Memphis begins season 4-0 for first time since 2011
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 24 University of Memphis women's soccer team improved to 4-0 for the first time since the magical 2011 season with a 6-0 victory over Rhode Island Friday evening at the Music City Invitational. The Tigers scored three goals in the first half and three in the second en route to the shutout victory.
The last time that Memphis scored six goals in a match was during the 2013 season when the Tigers achieved that feat, twice, against Alabama and Houston.
"I'm pleased with the result. You have to be pleased when you get a victory," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. For us to score six goals, that's fantastic. It was 3-0 at the half and I really challenged the girls to not sit back and to put the game away and they did. There are always things you can improve on, but as a coach with a result like today, we are very happy."
Junior Marie Levasseur got the scoring started for the Tigers in the 17th minute of the contest. Levasseur's goal ignited the Memphis offense as the Tigers scored the first three goals all within a six-minute stretch of the first half.
Maggie Overby scored her first collegiate goal in the 22nd minute of the match right before Elizabeth Woerner tacked on the third Tiger goal 52 seconds later. Levasseur and Lisi were credited with assists on Overby and Woerner's goals.
In the second half, Mikayla Morton joined in on the action with the conversion of a penalty kick in the 61st minute. She added a fifth goal for the Tigers in the 74th minute, which led to her first career multi-goal match.
Samantha Murphy put the finishing touches on the contest for Memphis with her first collegiate goal in the 78th minute of the contest.
The Memphis offense finished the match with 28 shots while the defense stifled the Rhode Island offense by holding it to just four shots. Sixteen of the 28 Memphis shots were on goal. The Tigers finished with three corner kicks compared to just two by Rhode Island.
Goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard recorded a save in her third shutout of the young season.
The Tigers continue play at the Music City Invitational Sunday afternoon with a 12 p.m. contest against Big 10 foe Indiana. Live stats are available at www.gotigersgo.com.
