Memphis records fourth shutout; Lisi and Woerner score for the Tigers
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Two first half goals led the No. 24 University of Memphis women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Big 10 foe Indiana Sunday afternoon at the Music City Invitational. The Tigers improve to 5-0 overall and will now prepare to return home next weekend for the Memphis Tournament.
Â
"We had a very specific game plan coming into today and I thought we started off the game great and stuck to the game plan. We really controlled the first half," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "Indiana is a pressure team and you have to be very smart with the way you play. I thought we did a great job with that."
Â
Memphis started its offensive attack early and connected in the 10th minute with Jessica Lisi's second goal of the season. Lisi finished Stasia Mallin's cross to the left side of the net.
Â
Elizabeth Woerner added to the Memphis scoring in the 33rd minute of the match with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Marie Levasseur registered her third assist with a cross into the box to Woerner.
Â
After one half of action, the Tiger offense had produced 11 shots compared to just two by the Hoosiers.
Â
Indiana threatened more in the second half with a shot that hit the cross bar. The Tiger defense, however, held strong and kept the Hoosiers at bay en route to the fourth shutout of the season.
Â
The match ended with the Tigers outshooting Indiana, 15-10, and goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard posted four saves for Memphis.
Â
For the weekend, Levasseur led the Tigers with five points (a goal and three assists), while Woerner and Mikayla Morton recorded a pair of goals each. Ashworth Shepard finished with five saves for Memphis.
Â
The Tigers will resume play next weekend in the Memphis Tournament at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Memphis will take on Rice Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Ole Miss Sunday at 7 p.m. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
