Tigers improve to 6-0-0 with Ole Miss coming up Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 18 University of Memphis women's soccer team improved to 6-0-0 with a 3-1 victory over Conference USA foe Rice Friday evening. Memphis scored the first three goals of the match, all from three different Tigers.
"I'm very pleased, Rice is a good team," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "Getting results are not easy against quality opponents and today was a good win."
The Tigers registered their first goal in the 42nd minute by way of a shot from Marie Levasseur, who launched her fourth goal of the season from outside the box. Her goal was unassisted after sneaking in the lower right corner of the net.
Memphis came out firing in the second half and quickly scored again in the 47th minute of the match. Elizabeth Woerner connected for her team-leading fifth goal of the season from 30 yards out after receiving a pass from Catherine Levasseuer from the left side. The ball was buried in the right corner, slipping past the diving Rice goalkeeper.
The Tigers struck one more time; this time it was Mikayla Morton taking it one-v-one against the Rice keeper. Morton received a well-placed pass from Stasia Mallin that split the Rice defenders and led to open waters for Morton. It was her fourth goal of the season.
With eight seconds left in regulation, the Owls put a score on the board with a goal from Ashley Burgess.
Memphis finished the match outshooting Rice 17-9, which included 13 shots in the second half. Twelve of the Tiger shots were on goal. Rachel Ashworth Shepard finished the match with three saves.
The Tigers resume play Sunday evening at the Memphis Tournament with a 7 p.m. contest against Ole Miss. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
