Tigers take on Rhode Island and Indiana in first tournament of the season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The No. 24 University of Memphis women's soccer team seeks to continue their winning ways at the Music City Invitational this weekend, taking on the Rhode Island Friday evening at 5 p.m. and Indiana Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn. The Tigers have opened the season with a 3-0 record for the second-straight season.
MATCH INFORMATION:
Memphis will be playing two teams that the program has never before faced, sending the Tigers into some uncharted waters.
"Right now we're trying to do as much research as we can on them. By kickoff on Friday, we'll be prepared," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "Our main focus is one game at a time. We're expecting two quality opponents, and for us, we're just trying to get a little bit better with each game."
The Tigers have so far defeated all three teams they've faced, including a thrilling win in double overtime against UAB in their last match. Led by juniors Elizabeth Woerner and Marie Levasseur, each with two goals on the season, Memphis looks to keep the offensive intensity at full throttle. Entering into the weekend, the Tigers are outshooting their opponents 48 to 22 through the first three matches.
Memphis stayed steady at No. 24 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll while receiving eight votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Tigers lead the league in goals scored per match at 2.67 and goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard ranks second among keepers with a 0.31 goals against average.
Rhode Island Rams
Led by first year head coach Megan Jessee, the Rams have started off the season 1-3 with their lone victory coming against Vermont on August 20th. The last two losses for the Rams have come with goals scored in the final minute of regulation and on a free kick in overtime, respectively. A bright spot for this team is senior forward Taylor Ross's hat trick in the win against Vermont.
Picked to finish 11th in the Atlantic 10, Rhode Island returns a group of 22 players, including six seniors, from a squad that finished 6-8-5 last season.
Indiana Hoosiers
Indiana has opened the year with a 2-2 record, taking wins over Cal Poly and Western Michigan. Head coach Amy Berbary enters her fifth season in command, leading the Hoosiers on a heavy laden schedule that includes 10 teams that went to the NCAA Tournament last year.
Selected to finish ninth in the Big Ten, Indiana brings back a squad that includes three Big Ten Preseason Honor nominees. The Hoosiers finished last season with a 7-9-4 record and have started the first four matches with freshman Bethany Kopel in goal.
