MEMPHIS – Redshirt sophomore women's golfer Michaela Fletcher has earned an NCAA at-large slot for the second time in as many seasons. Fletcher, who won her way to the NCAA Championships from the Notre Dame Regional with a top five individual finish in 2015, came back from missing all of last season due to injury and will compete May 8-10 in Columbus, Ohio on the OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course.
There are four regional sites in the NCAA Women's Golf Championship process. The top six teams and the top three individuals from each regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships, May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
In her first year back after taking time off for a back injury, Fletcher posted a 73.5 stroke average over 10 competitions. She posted eight top 20 finishes in 10 events this year, including three top fives. She finished as runner-up at the 2017 Central District hosted by Michigan State and finished third at the Memphis Intercollegiate last fall. She also finished tied for fifth at the 3M Augusta Invitational.
In her two-year playing career, Fletcher has competed in 21 events, posting 16 top 20 finishes and eight top fives. In 2014-15, after earning all-conference honors with a top five finish at the American Championships, she competed in the NCAA Regional at Notre Dame, carding a 217 to finish tied for fifth overall. As one of the top three finishers not in an advancing team entry in the event, she qualified for the NCAA Championship field, becoming the first Lady Tiger in school history to make the Championship round in the current regional/championship final setup.
Fletcher will be one of six individuals competing at the NCAA Columbus Regional. She is joined there by Loy Hee Ying (East Tennessee State), Camila Serrano (FIU), Emma Albrecht (Notre Dame), Kate Smith (Louisville) and Emie Peronnin (Minnesota).
There are 18 teams in the field at the Columbus Regional: Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado, Texas A&M, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan, San Jose State, Houston, Louisville, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Old Dominion, Delaware, Missouri State and Cleveland State.
Fletcher is one of two women's golfers from the American to earn an individual spot. East Carolina's Lisa Pettersson will compete in the Athens Regional.
