SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Memphis and Houston meet for the second time this season, and the first time in Memphis since the 2014-15 season. Houston comes into the game with a 19-8 record, and a 10-5 mark in American Athletic Conference play.
In its last game, Houston trailed by as many as 12 points to the UConn Huskies, including by ten at halftime, before the Cougars came out of halftime with a 25-6 over the first 10-plus minutes of the second to take a lead the hosts would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Damyean Dotson scored a game-high 25 points, hitting 9-of-19 shots from the field and 3-of-9 from long range, while Rob Gray scored 16.
Kyle Meyer flirted with a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, as Houston out-rebounded UConn 42-to-40, while Galen Robinson Jr. dished out a game-high seven assists.
For the season it has been Gray - the American Athletic Conference's leading scorer - that leads Houston, as the junior averages 20.4 points per game. Dotson averages 17.5, as the Cougars have three other players - Devin Davis (8.9), Danrad Knowles (8.1), and Wes VanBeck (7.9) that average nearly eight points per game or better.
Dotson has pulled down a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game, while also hitting 93-of-200 three-point field goals, for a percentage of 46.5 from long range. For the year, the Cougars out-rebound opponents by a rebound per game, as Robinson Jr. has dished out a team-best 129 assists against just 49 turnovers. Bertrand Nkali leads the team with 35 blocked shots, while Gray has a team-best 36 steals.
Â
On Thursday, February 23, Memphis point guard Jeremiah Martin did something that only 17 other players in the country this season have done. Martin scored 23 points - two off of his career-high - and dished out a career-high 11 assists. All of that, and he committed just one turnover in the game makes him one of 17 players to score 20+ points with 10+ assists and one or fewer turnover in a game. Of that group, two players' games came in overtime contests, and another came against a NCAA Division II opponent. He is one of two players in the American Athletic Conference to have done it this season, as Jalen Adams had 25 points, 11 assists and 1 turnover against NCAA Division II opponent Chaminade.
Â
The University of Memphis will honor Herb Hilliard at the men's basketball game on Sunday as part of a celebration of Black History Month. Hilliard was the first African-American to play basketball for the University of Memphis, and competed for the Tigers from 1967-69. The Millington, Tenn., native played in 37 career games and averaged 2.9 points and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting 50.8 percent from the field. In his first season in 1967-68, the 6-foot-4 forward/guard was the Tigers' second-leading rebounder with 130 rebounds and was also second on the team in field goal shooting at 51.2 percent. Hilliard shot 50 percent from the floor in 1968-69. While Hilliard was a pioneer for the Memphis basketball program, he has continued to play a leading role in Memphis and beyond. Among his many contributions, Hilliard is or has served as a member of the American Bankers Association Government Relations Council, the Tennessee Bankers Association Government Relations Council, the Financial Services Roundtable Government Relations Committee, the RMA Enterprise Risk Council, Chairman of the National Civil Rights Museum, the Board of BlueCross/Blue Shield Tennessee and Commissioner of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. He earned a BBA from Memphis State in personnel administration and industrial relations and in 2009, Hilliard was awarded the M Club's Billy J. Murphy Award, given annually to a former Memphis student-athlete who has made significant contributions in his or her professional life.
Â
Through 28 games during the season, and at least four more this season - three in the regular season and one conference tournament game - sophomore Dedric Lawson has season totals of 548 points, 282 rebounds, 93 assists, and 61 blocked shots. Those four totals put Lawson with an elite group of former student-athletes - just seven others since 1992-93 - who have put up similar total numbers over the course of an entire season. Joining Lawson with similar numbers is Chris Webber (1992-93) and Tim Duncan (1995-96 and 1996-97).
 Â
On Tuesday, February 7, Memphis forward Dedric Lawson became the 51st member of Memphis' 1,000-point club. His two-year career total now stands at 1,069, which is the 42nd-most in a career in school history. Below is where Lawson stands in the career record books, and the five players immediately ahead of the sophomore, and the amount needed to catch each.
Â
The Sunday afternoon meeting between Memphis and Houston features the two highest win totals currently active in the American Athletic Conference between Memphis head coach Tubby Smith (575-286) and Houston's Kelvin Sampson (554-307). Below is the list of the 11 head coaches in the American Athletic Conference, and their career records.
Â
University of Memphis sophomore Dedric Lawson's 5 career double-doubles have him standing sixth in career double-doubles among players currently active, and the most among sophomores. Below is the list of the top six career double-double leaders currently active.
Â
In the first meeting this season against Houston, the Tigers overcame a seven-point second-half deficit to topple the Cougars 70-67 in overtime at Hofheinz Pavilion. K.J. Lawson scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down a then-career-high 16 rebounds while dishing out five assists in a 43-minute effort. Jeremiah Martin (10 points, 3 assists) and Markel Crawford (9 points, 11 rebounds) pulled ironman efforts, playing the entire 45 minutes. Dedric Lawson also had an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. Houston's Rob Gray scored 21 points, while Damyean Dotson scored 14, and Danrad Knowles had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Â
This season, University of Memphis sophomore Dedric Lawson is averaging 19.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 blocked shots per game. He is just the second player since the 1992-93 season (24 seasons) to average such numbers, joining future NBA Hall of Famer Tim Duncan of Wake Forest (20.8 points, 14.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3.3 blocked shots) in that grouping. Additionally, there are just two players in that same time span to average at least 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game, and is joined by Houston's Bo Outlaw from the 1992-93 season.
Â
A large similarity between the Tubby Smith-coached Memphis Tigers and the Kelvin Sampson-coached Houston Cougars is that both coaches have employed their sons on the staff. Smith brought with him his son and former University of Kentucky standout and former Minnesota and Texas Tech assistant Saul Smith to his staff. Sampson has his son Kellen on his staff for his third season. Sampson earned three letters with the Oklahoma Sooners from 2004 to 2007. Additionally, Houston also has his daughter, Lauren Sampson as Director for External Operations.
Â
By just the happening of the schedule, the game on Sunday snaps a three-game stretch in the series in which games were played in Houston. The streak started in 2014-15 in the final game of a two-game series between the two schools, and last year Memphis had its road-only conference game against the Cougars at Hofheinz Pavilion. Earlier this season, Memphis closed the three-game stretch with a 70-67 overtime win over the Cougars.
Â
The game on Sunday will feature the two American Athletic Conference scoring pairs in Houston's Rob Gray and Damyean Dotson (37.9 combined points per game) and Memphis' Dedric Lawson and Markel Crawford (33.2 points per game). UCF is the next highest scoring pair in the conference at 32.1 points per game, with SMU representing the fourth of four schools with pairs that average over 30 points per game.
Â
TWO IN NBA CITIES
The American Athletic Conference has over half of its schools - six total - that have NBA teams in their cities. Two of those teams, Memphis and Houston, face off on Sunday. The remaining four schools are Temple, UCF, SMU, and Tulane.
Â
Memphis and Houston have met 43 times in each program's history, with Memphis holding a 28-13 all-time lead (not including two games vacated by the NCAA). In games in Houston, the Tigers are 10-6, and have won 19 of the last 23 games in the series.
Â
Memphis head basketball coach Tubby Smith is tied for the NCAA all-time record, having taken five schools (Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Texas Tech) to the NCAA Tournament. He is tied with Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger. An NCAA berth this season would also have him become the first-year coach in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament.
Â
University of Memphis head coach Tubby Smith and Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson have met seven times previously as head coaches, with Sampson leading the series 4-3. The first meeting came during the 1994-95 season, Smith's final season at Tulsa, the Sooners topped Tulsa 76-61 in Oklahoma City. The second time the teams met was during the 2006-07 season, when Smith's Kentucky Wildcats topped Sampson's Indiana Hoosiers 59-54 in Lexington. A year later in 2007-08 Sampson's Hoosiers won the two regular season games, before Smith and the Golden Gophers got their revenge in the Big Ten Tournament with a 59-58 win in Indianapolis. Sampson's Houston team got the final win in the Smith/Sampson match-up during the 2014-15 season, Smith's second with the Red Raiders, as Houston topped Texas Tech 82-69 in Las Vegas. Earlier this season Smith's Memphis squad won 70-67 in overtime against the Cougars

PUSHING TOWARDS A RECORD
Memphis head basketball coach Tubby Smith is tied for the NCAA all-time record, having taken five schools (Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Texas Tech) to the NCAA Tournament. He is tied with Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger. An NCAA berth this season would also have him become the first-year coach in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament.

MEETINGS WITH SMITH AND SAMPSON
