Second Half Comeback Falls Short As SMU Downs The Tigers

Taylor Williams hit a career-high five three-pointers in the setback

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team was unable to overcome a strong first quarter by SMU and fell by a score of 60-39 Wednesday evening. The Tigers fall to 13-14 overall and 6-8 in American Athletic Conference play.

Memphis has two more games remaining on the regular season schedule before heading to the American Athletic Conference Tournament on March 3-6 in Uncasville, Conn.

How It Happened
The game started in a back-and-forth fashion for the first six possessions until the Mustang offense picked up momentum. In that span, Taylor Williams hit a pair of three-pointers to get her career-night from beyond the arc started. An 18-1 run by SMU to close out the first quarter gave the Mustangs a 14-point lead over Memphis.

Memphis closed the gap by one after the second quarter and a third quarter run cut the SMU lead down to eight with 5:21 on the clock.

SMU answered, however, and went up by as many as 21 with under five minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers were held to season-lows in field goal percentage and total points scored. Over half of the Memphis field goals were three-pointers.

Turning Point
SMU rattled off an 18-1 run to close out the first quarter, taking a 23-9 lead over the Tigers. Memphis would cut the lead to eight in the middle of the third quarter, but that proved to be as close at the Tigers would come.

Notables

Taylor Williams hit four three-pointers in the first half and finished with a career-high five. She led Memphis with 15 points.
Brea Elmore hit a three-pointer in the third quarter, making that 19-straight games with a made three.
Memphis matched its season-high with seven three-pointers made. Vanderbilt and UCF (both home games) were the other two games with seven made threes.
SMU outrebounded the Tigers by one, 35-34.
