MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After not having an on-campus match in over 20 years, the University of Memphis rifle team hosts its second home match in three weeks at its new home, the Memphis Rifle Facility, in South Hall.
On Saturday, the Tigers welcome Mid-South rival Ole Miss for a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) showdown. Saturday's match starts at 8 a.m. (CT).
Memphis enters Saturday's conference encounter ranked No. 11 in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA). Ole Miss is ranked No. 13.
Two weeks ago (Jan. 28), the Tigers opened their new on-campus home with a tri-match against Nebraska and Jacksonville State. It was the program's first on-campus event in over 20 years.
Now, after the move and set-up to host the first on-campus match, Memphis' focus makes a quick shift to not only Ole Miss, but also the postseason that begins Feb. 18. Saturday's match is the final regular-season test for both Memphis and Ole Miss, with the NCAA Sectional Qualifier (Feb. 18) and GARC Championships (Feb. 24-26) on the horizon.
"Things are starting to come together for us (after our move), but we're still a couple of weeks behind in our training," said head coach Butch Woolbright. "We're starting to catch back up.
"In our match two weeks ago, we were close to where we were in November. Typically, after the semester break, it takes a good, solid week of practice to get ready for the second half of the schedule. We didn't get that because of the move and setting up the new range.
"We're starting to come back, and we'll have to be at our best Saturday. Ole Miss is a good team. They've put up some solid scores their past couple of matches. It should be a good match Saturday."
After a couple of subpar performances to start 2017, the Tigers bounced back in a big way in their home tri-match Jan. 28. Memphis placed second by a narrow six-point margin (4656-4650) to No. 8 Nebraska. Of the tri-match's top-10 aggregate scores, the Tigers posted five of them.
Senior Amy Fister, who's been fighting injuries and illness since the start of 2017, and freshman Levi Clark returned to their early-season form in the Jan. 28 tri-match. Fister and Clark both posted 1161 aggregate scores and placed in the tri-match's top-five.
Sophomore Leighton Dempster and freshman Amberlie Ezell have put together solid performances in recent matches. Dempster tied her career-high aggregate score (1166) at the Jan. 21 Withrow Invitational. A week later (Jan. 28), she shot a 589 in air rifle, which was her second-best mark of the season.
Ezell also has put up good scores recently. She shot a season-best 589 air rifle score versus Kentucky Jan. 15, and then followed with season-highs in both aggregate score (1159) and smallbore (577) at the Jan. 21 Withrow Invitational. At the Jan. 28 tri-match, Ezell was a couple of points shy of season-bests in both aggregate (1157) and air rifle (587).
