Martin and Davenport combine for 32 points for Memphis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Memphis men's basketball team was unable to overcome a first half deficit to UAB and ultimately fell by a score of 71-56 Thursday evening at the Bartow Classic. Memphis falls to 3-2 on the young season and now returns home for seven out of the next eight games.
Jeremiah Martin led Memphis offensively with a floor-high 18 points including 16 in the second half while Kyvon Davenport added 14. Raynere Thornton pulled down a career-high six rebounds and Martin led the team with four assists. Davenport also had a career-high three blocks.
It was the first setback to UAB since the 2006 season. The Tigers had won the previous 16 meetings against the Blazers as members of Conference USA.
The Tigers clawed their way back from a 24-point deficit in the second half. Martin's three-pointer with 7:09 left in the game cut the UAB lead down to 12, the smallest Blazer lead since the 10:40 mark in the first half. That three-pointer capped a 10-2 Memphis run and it proved to be the closest the Tigers would get for the rest of the game.
Memphis found its way into a hole early as the Blazers opened up the game with a 12-1 run through the first five minutes of action. After giving up the early UAB lead, Memphis competed toe-to-toe with the Blazers in the final five minutes before the break.
UAB grew its lead to as many as 24 before Memphis rattled off its second-half run. After the Tigers cut the lead to 12, the Blazers scored five of the next six points and continued to hold the Memphis offense at arms reach. Memphis finished the second half outscoring UAB, 35-31.
Memphis returns home for seven out of the next eight games, beginning with a match-up against Mercer on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off against Bears is slated for 4 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN3. Fans who bring two canned food items to the game can get Terrace level tickets for just $5.
